Now referred to as Leeds Beckett University, this institution has been providing education for students for almost two centuries since the founding of the Leeds Mechanics institute in 1824. These days, it is one of the largest and most popular universities in the country, with over 28,000 students and almost 3,000 members of staff.
Spread across 6 beautiful and state-of-the-art campuses, Leeds Beckett caters to students no matter what their interests or degree choice. Situated in the heart of Leeds, their City Campus is ideally placed so that students are right at the centre of the professional world, with hundreds of businesses and organisations commonly providing offerings of work placements and employment. At the Rose Bowl, students taking clinical degrees will find facilities decked out with modern equipment, as well as a range of scientific facilities for those studying biochemistry or the environment. Or there is the Headingly Campus, set in 100 acres of parkland and home to the university’s sports science laboratories, animation and music studios, and the latest computing labs. It is also where the main sports facilities can be found; these include playing fields and pitches, both inside and outside tennis courts, and a running track.
The city of Leeds itself continues to attract applicants from both within and without the country. Its thriving student life is supplemented by a strong multicultural community, as well as a cult music scene, both based around the city’s very own Hyde Park. The majority of Leeds’ students gravitate towards Headingley, which is full of independent boutiques, vintage emporiums, and numerous bars and cafes that are guaranteed to satisfy every taste and budget. Both campuses are linked by trains and buses which allow easy access from either side. The beautiful Yorkshire Dales are also just a short car or bus ride away -perfect for those in need of a brief break from the hubbub of city life.
Based around 4 main faculties (arts, environment and technology; business and law; Carnegie; and health and social sciences), Leeds Beckett University offers a diverse and relevant range of subjects for students to take up during their course of study. Emphasising employability at its core, the university has cultivated strong ties with employers and businesses throughout the years, ensuring a high rate of its students finding jobs after graduating.
