Staying Connected While Physically Distancing

Just because you have to practice physical distancing it doesn’t mean you have to social distance yourself. At a time like this it’s important to keep in contact with your friends and family and look after yourself. Keeping in contact with friends and family members you’d normally see helps create a form of normalcy, everyone is going through this situation together so speaking to them will help you to feel closer to them and less isolated. There are lots of different ways you can keep in contact, here’s 5 of our favourite ways to stay connected.

Virtual Hang Outs

Just because you can’t see your friends in person doesn’t mean you can’t have a virtual hang out. Join people all across the world and host a virtual happy hour or morning call using the websites listed below. If you only want to call one person at a time apps like Facetime, Whatsapp, and Facebook Messenger have video and audio call functions. If you want to video call lots of different people at the same time check out Zoom, Houseparty, Skype, and Google Hangouts. These allow you to call multiple people (for free), Zoom even allows you to call 100 people at the same time!

Movie Nights

If you want to have a movie night with your friends look no further. There are lots of different free Netflix extensions you can add. Netflix Party allows you to stream the same film/TV show at the same time as your friends, so no more ‘123 play’. The extensions also have a chat function so you talk about the movie/show as you would if you were sat on the sofa together. Kick it up a notch and order each other mystery takeaways for your movie night.

Online Games

Your parents may be the only ones who still use Facebook games but keeping in contact via online games is growing in popularity. Challenging your friends to a Words With Friends or imessage game is a low effort way of staying connected. If you and you friends are avid pub quizzers lots of pubs are now hosting online pub quizzes each night, gather your friends on Houseparty and join in!

Sending Letters

They may be old-fashioned and very The Notebook but letters are a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. They take longer to write than a quick text so feel more heartfelt and special. They’re also the perfect way to get creative, with thousands of Pinterest boards on letter designs! If you don’t fancy writing a letter you could send a quick postcard using apps like Touch Note or a card through Funky Pigeon or Moonpig. If you want to push the boat out you could send your friend a ‘care package’ full of their favourite sweets & products to brighten their day.

Exercise Together

It’s important to stay active when sitting at home. Exercise improves your mental wellbeing and relieves stress. If you’re someone who hates working out alone why not exercise with your friends? You could facetime your friend and both follow the same YouTube workout together, or make up your own. Lots of companies, gyms, and personal trainers are beginning to hold live workout sessions on their Instagram/Facebook pages.
