Safety in the Sun

Say goodbye to those cold and grey winter days, as we get ready for the long-awaited summer sun. Get those sunnies out and get that BBQ going; make the most of the British summer now that it’s finally here. With temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees in parts of England over the week just remember to stay safe and hydrated whilst out and about.

Although we all love the sun, it can be pretty dangerous. The majority of people in the UK forget to use sunscreen, and getting sunburnt does increase the chances of skin cancer. So whilst soaking up the vitamin D, ensure that you use sunscreen at least thirty minutes before going outside and again just before you leave. Read through the NHS website about SPF and how you should apply it.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, even if you do not plan to stay out long. It is advisable to carry a bottle of water, particularly in hot and humid conditions to ensure that your body has enough to hydrate itself. Our body is made up of 60% water, and it is highly recommended to drink water, even when not thirsty, to ensure sufficient levels. Be aware of the symptoms related to dehydration and be careful not to substitute water for other drinks such as tea, coffee and other carbonated drinks.

The sun is usually strongest from 11am to 3pm, so avoid being in direct sunlight for prolonged periods during this time. Take regular breaks from the sun and wear appropriate clothing. Keep them loose fitted and light coloured. Although hats and sunglasses are designed to protect you from the sun, they can also be used as a fashion accessory. And, it gives you an excuse to go shopping

Take advantage of the weather, and enjoy the heatwave. Just remember to be responsible and take regular breaks. Happy tanning!
