Architectural Association School of Architecture

AA School of Architecture

The Architectural Association (AA) has grown up alongside, and to a very great degree helped shape, modern architectural education and the profession, both in the UK and beyond.

The AA School offers:

A one year Foundation Course;

·    A five year ARB/RIBA recognised course in Architecture (Part 1 / Part 2);

·    11 post-graduate research programmes covering a range of design agendas; and

·    100+ short courses across five continents including a summer school in London (AA Visiting School).

Students applying directly from secondary education can join our Foundation Course or the First Year of the five year ARB/RIBA recognised course in Architecture.

The Foundation Course allows students with minimal experience in the creative fields to explore the possibility of a future career in architecture or the arts. This studio-based course offers hands-on instruction in creative design and thinking and gives students the means to develop skills in a variety of media.

First Year is the initial exposure to the five-year study of architecture. Through continuous interaction with experienced design tutors and collaborators who offer tutorials, seminars, workshops and presentations throughout the year, students can begin to develop their talents, strengths and modes of working to their highest potential.

Every year nearly 85% of our full-time students, and a similar percentage of tutors, come to the AA from abroad, creating a setting for a global discussion, debate and exchange of architectural ideas. Around one in six students receive financial assistance from our bursary, scholarship and assistantship programme. Students are eligible to apply for support regardless of age, nationality or background.

Our campus is located in the heart of London. All students have dedicated studio spaces and access to cutting edge workshop, prototyping and library facilities, and our famous Public Programme. In addition, Hooke Park provides workshop and fabrication space and expert technical support to construct models, buildings and 1:1 prototypes.

Our graduates are highly sought after by employers. AA alumni include Charles Jencks, Elia Zenghelis, Peter Cook, Dalibor Vesely, Joseph Rykwert, Daniel Libeskind, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Bernard Tschumi, Nigel Coates, Cedric Price, Nicholas Grimshaw… and many more.

Prospective applicants are welcome to visit the AA School anytime. The Admissions Office is open Monday to Friday between 10am – 6pm (closed 1pm – 2pm) and we are happy to answer your questions. If you wish to book a meeting with one of the team, please email us at Undergraduateadmissions@aaschool.ac.uk to arrange a personal visit / tour of the buildings.
