Birmingham City University


Birmingham City University (BCU) is one of the largest universities in the country, hosting approximately 25,000 students on 8 campuses across the city. The university is unique in its emphasis on preparing its graduates for the world of work, and we offer an extra year on top of the standard three for most degree courses, insisting that work experience should form an integral part of our students’ university education. 

BCU has a strong tradition of providing our students with in-company training placements and development programmes. The university’s efforts in this have led to many notable achievements, including the launching of BCU’s own pioneering student employment agency, OpportUNIty, which aims to offer students jobs around campus. In the past, the institution has also been awarded a Times Higher Education (THE) accolade for its academic partners scheme, showcasing BCU’s dedication to student support.

Alongside this, the university is renowned for its diverse atmosphere, attracting students from a range of backgrounds and cultures across the world. We also work closely with our local communities, with over half of our annual intake of candidates hailing from the city or surrounding areas. 

In terms of facilities, BCU has recently invested £260m in the revitalisation of our campuses, and, as of this year, we are midway through completing construction plans. Finished parts of the project include the opening of a £62m building dedicated to Media and Design. Students on medically related courses are assured the highest quality facilities at the Seacole Building, which grants students access to virtual hospital wards, simulation dummies, and mock operating theatres. Sports fanatics can run circles around the university’s £8m sports centre, complete with a large sports hall and fitness suite. Construction has begun on a new building to house courses in English, Law and various Social Sciences, as well as a state-of-the-art library and other student support services.
