The Courtauld Institute is a world-leading centre for the study, conservation and curation of art and its histories. An independent college of the University of London with the largest faculty of art historians and conservators in the UK, courses are highly specialist, taught by academics and researchers at the forefront of the field. The Courtauld Institute is one of the top five universities worldwide for the study of history of art (QS World University Rankings 2025).
The Courtauld Institute offers one undergraduate programme: BA History of Art. At postgraduate level, programmes include MAs in History of Art, Curating, Conservation, Art and Business, Contemporary Art and the Moving Image, and a rigorous PhD programme. Providing both depth and range, studying works of art first-hand, all programmes build strong subject-specific knowledge alongside the skills necessary for any future career.
Facilities include outstanding libraries, conservation studios, and The Research Forum, which offers access to visiting speakers from around the world. Most study takes place at Vernon Square, King’s Cross – right at the heart of London - and many of the best art collections in the world are close-at-hand, including the Courtauld’s own Gallery. The Courtauld Gallery, based at the historic Somerset House, is home to one of the world’s great art collections including iconic Impressionist masterpieces, Manet’s A Bar at the Folies Bergère and Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear.

The Courtauld Institute is in the heart of London. Most teaching takes place at King’s Cross, Vernon Square, Penton Rise, London WC1X 9EW.
Conservation programmes are based at Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 0RN, right beside the Courtauld Gallery.
