Newcastle University

The University can trace its origins to a School of Medicine and Surgery established in 1834, and to Armstrong College, founded in 1871 for the teaching of physical sciences.

Newcastle is a Russell Group University and we ranked joint 22nd out of 123 in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2015. Ranked 8th in the UK for Medical and Life Sciences (2014), 3rd in the UK for English, and we were placed in the top 12 for Geography, Architecture and Planning, and Cultural and Media Studies (2014). We are also an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) top 20 strategic partner. In addition, we are placed in the top 20 for graduate career prospects (The Times and Sunday Times University Guide, 2015; The Guardian University Guide 2015; The Complete University Guide 2015).

We have been awarded five QS stars (the highest available) and the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) commended our management of academic standards and quality of learning by giving us a 'judgement of confidence'.

We have a world-class reputation for research excellence and also for academic excellence. Newcastle University was the first UK university to establish a fully owned international branch campus for medicine at its NUMed Campus in Malaysia. The range and standard of our facility provision is outstanding. We are investing over £10m per year to our award-winning teaching, learning and research services.

We are spearheading three major societal challenges that have a significant impact on global society. These themes are: Ageing and Health, Sustainability, and Social Renewal.

Our core academic functions are - research and innovation, teaching and learning and the student experience, and engagement. Strategic leadership of each of these areas is provided, on a university-wide basis, by a pro-vice-chancellor. Delivery occurs in our three core academic structures:

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Faculty of Medical Sciences (Newcastle Biomedicine)

Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering

Each faculty consists of a number of academic units typically a school or research unit.

As a world-class cultural destination, Newcastle enjoys a vibrant arts scene, which is also reflected on campus. There is an arts gallery, independent theatre, world-class museum, and a variety of performance spaces, which provide plenty of opportunities for you to soak up the cultural atmosphere. Newcastle University's reputation for sport is well deserved. Our sports teams have finished in the top 10 out of around 146 Higher Education institutions in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) table for five of the last eight years.
