University of Sheffield
Historically, the University of Sheffield was granted the Royal Charter in 1905 and opened by King Edward VII. Today, it remains a popular choice amongst students and plays host to well over 25,000 students, all of them enjoying the lively and friendly atmosphere of the city and its residents. University buildings are located to the west of the city centre; this is also where all the good shops, bars, pubs and clubs are to be found.
During the last Teaching Quality Assessment, the university was awarded grades of ‘excellent’ in 29 subject areas, a record that pits this institution against only the best in this country. It has a strong reputation in delivering world-class research, earning it a rank amongst the top ten in the Russell Group (the association of leading UK research-focussed universities). In particular, architecture, town and regional planning, geography, mechanical engineering, music, English, Russian, politics, history, Asian studies, computer science, dentistry, journalism and religious studies stand out in terms of the University’s academic strengths.
If none of this convinces you, then it is worth noting that the University was voted No.1 in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey for the years 2014-15. The survey was conducted based on feedback from students, questioning their university experience with regards to accommodation, facilities, student support, social life and the students’ union. Coming first out of all the universities in the country proves that the University of Sheffield provides the highest standards of accommodation, the best social life, most modern facilities, as well as the most thriving and supportive students’ union in the UK.
